Fuck, I am who I am / Shane Aquart

Michael Shane Aquart, age 57.

Shane was born in Jamaica into a Jamaican family; and grew up (after age 9) in a kind of ‘triangular’ way between grandparents with whom he lived, his mother, his father, all in different countries, and schools and colleges abroad. He has two children and lives in the Cayman Islands with the person that makes his life go round. He is an artist.

What makes you laugh?

Lots of things. When did you last cry?

Dunno ... We all get teary eyed at joyful or sad emotional triggers, but cried, really cried, 35 years ago. What’s your earliest memory?

A pig coming out of the bush and frightening me while I was alone outside in new surroundings; I was around 2.5 years old (but very few memories till about 6 years old) and we had just moved from the farm to town to live: I have no recollection of the farm and then in the coming weeks having moved to town, many little memories. Describe what ‘love’ means to you.

Everything (both what it means to me and how I’d like to project it outward) and more specifically to give love a face - Max, Madeleine and Pam (there are others of course ...). What makes you unique to everyone else on this planet?

We are all genetically and hormonally programmed, designed to be more alike than we are different. If you’ve ever had a crisis of life and circled your friends and relatives for answers, if you read histories, you suddenly realize that we all, man and woman old and young, suffer the same crisis’ at the same time in our lives and for exactly the same reasons. Name 3 people (living or dead) you’d invite to your virtual quarantine dinner party.

Tough one ... Might change tomorrow and so many names passed through my mind: the publisher of Taschen books (hoping that they themselves are as interesting and as thoughtfully varied the books), Ewan McGregor - so many good movies and the adventures of riding around the world and pole to pole; Bob Marley (although from that time and place I prefer Peter Tosh’s music, Bob in interviews is such a thoughtful human). And I presume that Pam’s gonna be there too and if not we’d lose Mr Taschen!

His tomorrow version: Keith Richards for obvious reasons, Christopher Brooks (because I want to know about his photographs and his farm), and President Trump ‘cause dying to know what he’s really like – if he’s nuts or its just a persona ‘cause his demographic’s nuts. Describe yourself in 5 words (this can be a sentence or 5 separate words).

Calm, Creative, Kind, Loving, Present. Who or what has made the greatest impact on your life?

An itinerant and adventurous life lived between countries and family and that family then and now ... and my own little family right now. Any regrets?

None Tell us something no one knows about you (and I mean no-one)?

Until now. There’s nothing.
